Another Roseburg pitcher flirted with perfection in Tuesday’s five-inning win against Eagle Point. Mike Morin was three outs away from recording a perfect game, but the senior had to settle for a one-hit shutout in the Indians 13-0 win over the Eagles.
Morin gave up a leadoff single to Evan Jolliffe in the top of the fifth. The momentum of the Eagles’ first hit was short lived as Morin struck out the next hitter and Josh Graham threw out Jolliffe as he tried to take second base on the strike out pitch.
The fifth inning continued to be the toughest stretch for Morin when he walked his first hitter in the next at bat. Once again the momentum was short lived as the Indians’ defense supported their pitcher. Jack Backen, starting at first base with Morin on the mound, snagged a sharp ground ball down the line for the game’s final out.
Roseburg took the lead on an RBI single by Boog Leach in the bottom of the first inning and scored at least two runs in each of the following three innings. The team hit through the lineup in both the third and the fourth, where they put a total of ten runs on the board.
Kody Matthews, Josh Graham, and Jared Priestley all had multiple hits on the day. Matthews and Priestley added three RBI to their stat lines, while Graham had four. Morin finished his day with six strikeouts and one walk and improved his pitching record to 2-0.
Roseburg improves to 13-1 overall and will have a pivotal doubleheader match-up against Crater on Saturday. The Comets are a game behind the Indians in league play and the weekend could give either team a decided advantage in the race for the league title. The games can be heard on Fox Sports Radio 1490 The Score and online at 541radio.com starting at 11:45 A.M.
